Everyone wants to fight for something. The tricky part is that the something fights back — it shapes you into whatever it needs you to become.

Scene 2

Plenty of causes feel righteous. That's the problem — righteousness is a feeling, not a blueprint. The recruitment pitch never opens with 'Join us and slowly become worse.'

Scene 3

Here's what separates a cause that builds from one that burns: check the output, not the slogan. A building cause produces something real — a shelter, a skill, a fed kid. A burning cause mostly produces more outrage and a leaderboard of who's angriest.

Scene 4

The test is embarrassingly simple. Ask: what did this cause put into the world last month that wasn't a post, a protest sign, or a dunk on somebody? If the answer is nothing — you're not in a cause. You're in a mood.

Marcus spent two years in a group that called itself a movement. Meetings ran hot, the enemy was always clear, and he felt like he mattered. Then he counted: two years, zero things built. The day he walked into a community repair shop and fixed his first stranger's furnace, he finally understood what purpose actually weighs.

Scene 1

A cause worth your life should be easy to audit — what did it build this month, and who's better off because of it? If you can't answer that in one sentence, the cause might be wearing you instead of the other way around.

Scene 2

Most bad causes pass the feelings test with flying colors — they make you furious, righteous, certain. That's the trick. Feeling like you matter and actually mattering are two completely different line items.

Scene 3

Here's the technique: the Build-or-Burn Test. Three questions — does this cause create something tangible, does it welcome scrutiny, and can you name a specific person it helped? Two out of three and you're in decent shape. Zero and you're volunteering for a bonfire.

Scene 4

Run it like this. Pick a cause you care about right now — or one recruiting you hard — and answer each question honestly on paper. Not in your head, on paper. Your brain will lie to you in the dark. Ink makes it harder to cheat.

Scene 5

Maria ran the test on two groups she'd been pouring time into. One scored three for three — it ran a tutoring program and she could name the kids. The other scored zero. All it ever produced was outrage and another funding email. She kept one. You can guess which.

Scene 6

You don't need a perfect cause. You need one that builds something real and survives an honest question. That's rarer than it should be — and you now know how to find it.
